Two Simple Ways to Finally Organize Your Board Games

Imagine this: game night is about to start and you’re trying to get Sorry out from under a dangerously high stack of board games. You were almost successful, until Monopoly decided to give way. Now you’re facing a disastrous pile of fake money, dice, games cards, and half ripped instructions.

It is easy to get frustrated when a fun night turns into another thing to clean rather than a way to make memories.

Today, I’m sharing two simple ways to store board games so you can avoid the chaos!

Option 1: Original Boxes (with minor upgrades)

Many of my professional organizing clients love the nostalgia of the original board game boxes. I can’t argue…they brighten up a room! Unfortunately, over time the boxes get very loved and show it: rips, tears, and non-functioning lids.

Also…how in the heck do you stack them nicely in a closet or on a shelf without them toppling every time?

STORE VERTICALLY & USE RUBBER BANDS.

Trust me.

I know, you’re thinking vertical storage of board games sounds like a mess with pieces falling out left and right. Thankfully, Amazon carries amazing, large, durable, rubber bands. I use these to hold everything together. For games like Apples to Apples, I use zipper pouches inside to keep cards from spilling everywhere.

With these simple upgrades, your games suddenly have a neat, library-style look.

A recent client loved this option because it preserved the “look” of their game shelf but made grabbing and putting away the games so much easier.

Option 2: Zipper Pouches & Bins

If you read the first option and are still feeling frustrated with your boxes that don’t stack, this next option is for you. Zipper pouches are a game-changer! Each game goes in its own pouch and then all of the pouches tuck nicely into a bin or bins.

You can cut the original box and tape it to the pouch to still benefit from the beautiful artwork…

OR

…simply label the pouch with a label maker for a clean and modern look.

I always recommend opaque or clear bins — they keep the space looking tidy but also accommodate the visual people in your house who want to quickly glance to find the game they want.

One family I worked with told me their kids now play more often because the games are easier to grab and nothing spills when they put them away.

Quick Wins

  • Decide if you love the look of original boxes or prefer a cleaner system.

  • Upgrade original boxes with bands, pouches, & vertical storage.

  • Switch to zipper pouches and opaque bins for the most durable, kid-friendly option.

Whether you love your boxes or are ready to toss them, a simple system makes game night stress-free.

If this feels like too much to tackle alone, I’d love to help set up your perfect board game system.
